JOHNSTONE CASTLE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE

PROFILE

Johnstone Castle Learning Centre is the focal point for community learning, information, activity regeneration in Johnstone Castle.

We are proud that the Learning Centre is community led and community managed.  The Centre is a company limited by guarantee and the Board of Community Directors are determined that community leadership and management continues.

The Learning Centre has had close links with the Johnstone Castle Community Forum, which represented the community’s interests.  Two thirds of the Centre’s Board of Directors were taken from the members of the Community Forum.  These links reinforce the importance of the Learning Centre as the focus for community activity and community activists in the area.  The Learning Centre has strong involvement with Renfrewshire Community Planning.

JCLC was set up in 1999 as a result of the community's shock at closure of the community library and the feeling that there should be some sort of community resource in Johnstone Castle. Originally set up to provide outreach facilities for SIP partner organisations, including activities and learning opportunities for young people,  we have now broadened our services to provide classes and opportunities for other ages and interest groups.

Since 2003, the Learning Centre has become a central component of community life in the Johnstone Castle area. Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery, the Learning Centre has now managed to establish its own identity and direction, as directed by the local community.

The Learning Centre works in partnership with a number of local agencies and support from Renfrewshire Council.
